Sustainable conservation cannot rely solely on research and ecosystem protection. The involvement of communities who live and carry out their daily activities around these areas is essential to ensuring that conservation efforts can continue in the long term. Local knowledge, everyday experience, and communities’ understanding of their environment are valuable assets that need to be strengthened and connected with conservation approaches.
For MATA Nusantara, communities play an important role in maintaining the sustainability of nature in their own areas. Therefore, through its conservation activities, MATA Nusantara seeks to strengthen community knowledge and capacity so that people can actively participate in conservation processes. This approach positions communities not as beneficiaries or subjects of conservation activities, but as partners with valuable knowledge, experience, and an important role in protecting their environment.
One example of this approach is MATA Nusantara’s work on the conservation of estuarine crocodiles in Sumba, including the development of practical guidelines to support community participation in crocodile monitoring. The guidelines cover the use of camera traps, navigation and recording of observation locations, and spotlight survey methods. Capacity building also includes knowledge about crocodile conservation, the importance of protecting their habitat, and ways to coexist more safely with crocodiles. This knowledge is then reinforced through the direct involvement of community members in field data collection and monitoring.
Learning and Participating Directly in Conservation
Through this process, communities not only learn how data are collected, but also gain a better understanding of crocodile populations and the condition of their surrounding habitats. Direct involvement is expected to strengthen awareness while building a sense of ownership of conservation efforts over the long term.
For MATA Nusantara, conservation becomes stronger when communities have the knowledge, skills, and opportunities to participate as conservation partners. In this way, the protection of crocodiles and their habitats can develop into a shared and sustainable effort.
